Fair Work Bill: Summary Continued - Page 11 Other states are going through a process at the moment of resolving responses to the new environment, particularly given that state systems are, in practice becoming somewhat less relevant given the broadened coverage provided to the federal jurisdiction initially by Workchoices and to be maintained by the new legislation. Still, the Fair Work Bill represents a new world with a number of changes over its predecessor. This article does not purport to fully detail the legislation but is a summary only. Employers should ensure that they are familiar with the central elements of those changes as necessary. The Bill is only in the initial stages of the parliamentary process, having undergone its first reading. However it is highly likely that the Bill will pass the House of Representatives with no changes before completion of the sitting schedule for this year. It will then be introduced to the Senate early in the New Year. Though there is some potential for changes to occur within the Senate I suspect that changes will not occur, and to the extent they do, they will be limited. It can be anticipated that the Fair Work Bill as it is or varied only slightly will be law in the New Year.
